The Praise Singer A Disciple of Melchizedek by David Martyn

The story of God's revelation to a simple shepherd; a new testament story lived in old testament times.

An orphaned and nameless slave called only Jael, meaning "mountain goat," is left to tend the village flocks. He sees the revelation of God all around him. He learns that the rainbow is a sign of God's covenant spoken to Noah. Jael runs off to find Shem, a son of Noah, who confirms God is calling him and his new gift of praising God in song is the sign of his calling. Shem teaches him and tells him a new name is reserved for him if he continues to seek God. His journey takes him to Salem where King Melchizedek disciples him and confides that God has one thing against him. Jael must confront God's indictment. Melchizedek sends him home to shepherd his village masters. Jael faces personal tragedy and doubt in his new flock, but through it all, his encounter with God in Melchizedek's garden is his solid foundation of faith.

Jael's journey, like ours, is a lifelong struggle to keep his promise to God, to first love God and then love all men.

Running for One's Life by Lauren Jedlan

This hauntingly lovely tale parallels the journey of two people with that of a young dog. The victim of a puppy mill has seized an auspicious moment to escape his cage. Similarly, a gifted artist, Mariana Falla, has fled the constraints of the communist regime in Cuba shortly after the revolution. Daniel Sullivan, once a dedicated veterinarian, likewise has broken free from a web of despair. Having discovered that someone deliberately set fire to his clinic, he has lost faith in humanity.

The author delves into the mind and heart of the small dog. She puts into words his imagined thoughts and feelings during his lonely trek through a deep and ever-winding ravine and his climb up into the daunting Adirondack Mountains. Despite the bitter cold and blasting Nordic wind, there is a magic weaved through nature, a beauty which guides and leads as the story unfolds. The same principle acts upon Mariana and Daniel as they together search for the lost dog.

They are not without guides, however. Virginia Goia, a middle-aged woman who manages the village animal shelter, befriends them. She encourages Mariana in her search for the lost dog, and she supports the latter’s efforts to close down the puppy mill. Also, Virginia listens to Daniel’s heart and inspires hope in him. The runaway dog has a guide as well. A little dog suddenly enters his life. This stranger is radiant, as though of fairy dust, and is elusive.

The Shirt on His Back by Virginia Mackenzie

Joe and Vera Bailey and their four daughters got caught up in a vicious and deadly civil war in Liberia in 1990. Their daughters were fifteen, twelve, ten, and two. At that time in Liberia, Charles Taylor was trying to take over the brutal regime of Samuel Doe by using even more brutal, dreadful methods. The country was in complete political, economic, and social chaos. Their very lives depended on escaping the country. Vera was allowed to escape first with the baby because little Nai Nai had been born in the United States. Vera eluded the shooting and looting to finally reach the American embassy, where she was able to get an American marine helicopter to Sierra Leone, and a flight to America. Joe and the other three girls had to wait for several agonizing months to escape, never knowing if they would ever see Vera and the baby again. Joe said that he got out of there with only The Shirt on His Back!

The Man by Michael S. Corcoran

“The Man”. Not just any man, but someone who has touched lives from the beginning of time. This is the story we are commanded to take to the world, and why. That is why I felt it was important to make it on a children’s level. The sooner we can get them to know Him from whom our blessings flow, the sooner they can start to live and glorify God in this life and the next.

Footprints on My Mirror by J. Grace Warren

Do you believe in dreams, angels, omens, old wives’ tales, superstitions, or phenomena? Jolene and her son Marlon didn’t until they both experienced some strange happenings that made them doubt their sanity at times.

Experiencing any of those can be frightening, but imagine being unable to give an account of the end result of your sick child, as Jolene did with her seven-month-old baby girl Marisa. Marisa suffered greatly with an unkind disease cystic fibrosis. She was admitted in a neighboring island’s hospital for treatment and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

Burial was performed the following day without an autopsy, arranged by the hostess where Jolene stayed in the country. However, in her distraught state of mind, she was unaware of the contents of the tiny coffin that was placed in the ground.

Some years later, Jolene has a dream about Marisa just before she experienced what she thought to be a phenomenon, recurring tiny footprints appearing on her full-length mirror in her bathroom and other areas of her apartment. Thoughts of Marisa resurrected, and she realized she didn’t have enough proof of her death and burial to be content with. She initiated an investigation but never received a clear and definite account of the event. Other sightings and omens and old wives’ tales continued to be experienced.

Day after day, Jolene wondered if she would ever know what really happened to her baby girl and be at peace with herself.
